When you have his attention move the treat slowly back toward the tail. When the dog starts to sit, give the command and signal. Minimize noise and movement distractions during the training session.Fortunately,"Down" is usually easy to train. Dog Training - How NOT To Train Your DogJust about every dog owner truly wants to train their dog well. Be patient, clear and consistent. If the dog backs up do the technique near the couch or a fence where he has nowhere to go. But dogs tend to be happy when the alpha is, and upset when he is. They will usually just endure the punishment without learning anything.Dog Training - Down Command - Dogs have a natural inclination to adhere to a hierarchy with an alpha (leader) at the top.Lets get one thing carved in stone right away - Dogs are not hairy fluffy kids. You have to be geared up to repeat the same order, day in and day out, and occasionally not get the same outcome. "Site" the dog then move the treat to the ground just in front of the nose. Simultaneously, gently take both the dog's forelegs and pull toward you, issuing the voice command. Most times, they are not ignoring the command as much as failing to understand it.Dogs, like humans, much more readily follow those they trust than those they fear.As a result, it can be frustrating to repeat the same command over and over, only to have the dog apparently ignore you. When the behavior is complete, praise lavishly. At completion praise lavishly and reward.Patience is the number one required quality, therefore. So, the dog hasn't evolved to understand why you're hitting them. As important is what he is not doing! In a sit dogs can't chase cats, knock over furniture, run into the street. As a last resort, for the stubborn or slow learner, give the command and at the same time push gently on the back near the tail as you lift his chin. Follow those futile techniques and you'll harvest the pay back of a neurotic dog and you will be an unhappy owner.Encourage by taking a treat or toy. The result is often a common catalogue of errors that can be, with more or less effort, headed off before they begin. Don't be harsh, but don't give up easily either. To start take advantage of spontaneous behavior. For the slow learner or assertive dog, it may be necessary to use a collar and short leash - two to four feet is best - 'Sit' the dog and kneel down facing him.To command sit, stand and face the dog then make the command. Now bring out other techniques. You want the dog to associate the position with good feelings - his and yours. Associate a unique hand signal and tone with the command. In really hard cases, kneel nd put the leash loop under one foot and slide it under the knee of the opposite leg, facing at a slight angle to the dog. But a nearly equal number will underestimate the time, skill and elbow grease it takes to do it as it needs to be done - Especially if they are a new dog owner and have bought a high energy breed when they should have gone for a lower energy submissive type.Difficulty training 'sit' varies by breed, individual and training style.Part of that patience means keeping your temper when you would like to lash out physically. Some will get it fast,

Needs editing
- Jug (dog), new article, very much needs references, etc.
- Hearing dog, Patterdale Terrier
- Someone added a long discussion on rabies in general to the dog article; that needs to be edited out & make sure info is in rabies article. Elf | Talk 06:43, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
- Huh, got 2 articles on same topic: Hachiko and Hachi-Ko need to be merged (and I'd check the latter for copyvio, too, if it were me). Elf | Talk 21:35, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
Misc to check

- Image:Rock3.jpg and Image:Rock11.jpg: User labeled with "This image is copyrighted. The copyright holder allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that credit is given to the photographer" (which is one of our standard wikipedia labels: {{CopyrightedFreeUseProvidedThat|...}}). I'm still unclear on whether this is an OK kind of license for photos to have on wikipedia. My impression is that there's a core who believe that only GFDL or public domain should be allowed and/or used, but I don't entirely understand all the issues, nor even whether I've gotten it right about what "should" be allowed. - What needs to be done to the schnauzer picture? I own several AKC Ch schnauzers and I can take a new picture. Or does it just need to be cropped? --Arithmia 22:52, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
Infobox Dogbreed Template
See Template:Infobox_Dogbreed for a start. Need to iron out various bits. Then--apply to all the articles that I've just got done editing. IF people think this will make it easier rather than harder. It will certainly make it easier to be able to tweak the tables in the future--e.g. moving all of the standards links to a different position could've been done simply by changing this template rather than changing every *#*@* page.
You can see what it might look like to enter into an article here: Template:Infobox Dogbreed/test. Elf | Talk 22:16, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
See talk page for further discussion on this topic. Elf | Talk 21:52, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
Now that we have the Infobox finalized, I am going to convert all dog breed articles from table format to the new template format. I am working on this, but it seems un-bottable, becuase it's the tables are simply all over the place. So, I have done all dog articles (articles that are a member of Category:Dog breeds) from A through through letter BZ. I'll update this as more work is done. - Trysha (talk) 06:26, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
I AM DONE (okay, maybe not totally) -
It might be nice to get some other eyes looking at the dog breeds, spotting errors or suggesting to tweaks to the tables.
Missing dog-related articles
(List of red links encountered while browsing dog articles... not sure whether this is a good idea or not, but it might help to consolidate some random links and to identify empty areas.)
- Kennel Club of India
- Tracking (dog)
- Tracking trial (I think some tracking (dog) links shd really go here...)
- Field trial
- Obedience trial--probably can start by splitting some stuff off of obedience training, to which a lot of trial references are currently piped & shouldn't be, so all the What Links Here to latter would need to be checked & adjusted as needed
- Rally obedience
- Hunt test or something like that...
- Coonhound event
- Sporting Group
- dog toy
- Utility dog (might just need to be a redirect, maybe to working dog? or an article about Utility Dog Group?)
Missing dog portal
And now there are portals! Need Portal:Dogs. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Dog_breeds#Dog_portal for info and discussion. Elf | Talk 05:54, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
